seventeen inhalations (2022)

"Seventeen Inhalations" suggests syncing one's breath with the artificial organ displayed on the screen. The breathing rate of this organ is slower than that of a resting person. If viewers succeed in synchronizing their breaths, they will be able to reduce their breathing rate, which, in turn, will decrease their heart rate.
This project is based on the concept of interpersonal synchrony, which refers to the phenomenon where individuals begin to physically mirror one another when engaging in social interactions, leading to a kind of physiological coupling. This phenomenon extends to various aspects of human interaction, including speech patterns, body language, and even physiological functions such as breathing and heart rate. One notable study found that couples can synchronize their heart rates and breathing patterns when sitting close to each other.
